SOLIDARITY FOREVER
Because the family was so poor, each summer I got sponsored to go to the mountains for a week. One year, I went to Eddie Cantor’s camp, Surprise Lake Camp. Another year, I chose Camp Nishgedeiget, which, translated from the Yiddish means “Camp Carefree.” Camp Nishgedeiget was run by communists, but what did that matter to me, Sonny Salter of Brighton Beach? Fun was fun. Two songs remain in my memory:
