it’s better to be lucky in love
When the honeymoon couple tried to break the bank, the casino owners broke their bank. Sonny was philosophical about the failure of his system, saying, “Well, it's better to be lucky in love!” This term was used innumerable times during his many years of gambling and losing. Sonny finally lost interest in that “sport,” much to Janet's joy.
Sonny and Janet left Lake Tahoe and returned to Los Angeles where they rented an apartment. Sonny thought he might avoid the draft if he worked in the shipyards, but after three nights of arriving home dirty and miserable at 6 a.m., he decided this wasn't for him, so he went back to his job at Universal Studios.
One night Janet made such a delicious roast beef dinner that her father thought Hallie made it, and the next week Janet invited her mother over to enjoy Spanish Delight. Birdene complimented her saying it was the best. It was very difficult trying to be with both of Janet's parents, especially during holidays, but the couple did their best to divide their time equally.
Before Sonny enlisted in the army, the couple visited Janet's paternal grandfather, Louis Lipsky, in Brooklyn. His wife, Rachel, had passed away, but his son, Sam, wife Pearl and their two children, Barbara and Herbert, lived in the same well-built two-story home.
Janet's Uncle Sam and his family lived with his parents from the day he married Pearl until they passed away, after their two children got married. She and Sonny remember Grandfather Louis standing straight, six feet tall, and keeping an eye open when any young woman walked by.
When the couple returned to California, Sonny enlisted in the army and Janet got a job with publicist Henry Rogers, who was the brother of her best friend, Lilian.
