Our Forefathers and Foremothers 11
A NEW BOYFRIEND
Grandma and Mr. Goodman lived together for several happy years. Sonny and I visited one day, and the Good Humor Ice Cream truck was parked at the home. We found my grandma sitting on one end of a bench holding hands with a stranger, while Mr. Goodman was sitting at the other end!
We ordered three vanilla ice creams from the Good Humor man. My grandmother whispered, “You don’t have to buy one for Benny. He won’t know the difference.” We knew right then that the honeymoon was over! My grandma introduced us to her new beau, informing us that in a few weeks the two of them were going to Las Vegas! They were acting like a couple of bad kids! This never materialized, as Fannie was taken ill and was hospitalized. She never completely recovered and, sadly, after several weeks she passed away.
My grandmother was quite a gal. I still think of her, dancing at the Casino Gardens and at the Bon Ton Ballroom on Lick Pier. When she was quite old, she’d say to me, “Life is a dream.” I didn’t understand what she meant then, but I do now, as a great-grandma in
my eighties.

Good Humor trucks and their merry chimes devised to snare customers were common in Beverly Hills back in the old days.
