SIDNEY MEETS SONNY
When my future husband, Max Salter, asked my dad if he would consent to our marriage, my father threw his arms around him and kissed him! I thought Max (nicknamed Sonny), would faint on the spot! No one in his family ever kissed anyone! The most the Salters did was to shake someone’s hand, and no man would ever kiss another man! However, as the years went by, my husband started showing affection, and to this day he kisses his grown children and grandchildren. My father really liked Sonny, especially as I was getting married and was not pregnant!
A WIRE-HAIRED TERRIER COAT
After I became Mrs. Salter, my dad was always slipping me money whenever he saw me, but we never let Sonny know, as he was very proud and didn’t want to accept “charity.” When Sonny was in the navy and I spent a year in Shawnee, Oklahoma, the winter came, and it was freezing. I called my father, asking him to send me some kind of warm coat. A few days later I opened a big box and discovered the ugliest fur coat in the world. It was a combination of dark-gray, light-gray and white stiff scrub-brush. It looked like a giant, wire-haired terrier, but I wore it anyway and it kept me warm.
