“Chinatown mourns the passing of Nigger Mike Salter. His dive was at 12 Pell Street during the reign of the Five Points, the Monk Eastman, the Humpty Jackson and other gangs that terrorized the lower East side. Salter was a clever politician and prospered but finally the police stepped in and closed his resort. Nigger Mike was handy with his fists but was loyal to those who stood with him in his various gang escapades. He paid for the funerals of a dozen or more gangsters in his day.”
