HOME ON HAYWORTH
We finally settled down in the Carthay Circle area, living at 1138 South Hayworth Avenue for about six years. I went to Carthay Center School for fifth and sixth grades, then on to John Burroughs Junior High, from seventh through ninth grade.
Our family became good friends with the O’Learys who lived on the ground floor. Their son Freddie and I often played together, and he’s the reason I never smoked cigarettes. He invited me into the garage to smoke some Mexican cigarettes, and after a few puffs, I vowed never to smoke again!
Some of my girlfriends and I started a club called “The Jolly Six,” and even though we included another girl, which made our club seven members, we stayed “The Jolly Six.” We met every Wednesday after school, rotating the meeting place amongst our houses.
All of the other mothers made delicious desserts, like chocolate chip cookies with ice cream sundaes or chocolate pudding with whipped cream, but my
