mother could only make jello, Strawberry or cherry jello with nothing inside — just plain, old, red jello. One time she reluctantly added sliced bananas. However, she was never home, and I had to be the hostess.
I never minded being home alone because we had a lovely living room, and I was a voracious reader. I would sink into the couch with a book and a box of the newly created Ritz crackers, reading and munching, utterly content.
There was always a vaudeville show too, which I adored. I remember dancing up and down the aisles when the music played, trying to imitate the performers.
