“BOTTL’ O WATTAH”
Janet enrolled at Los Angeles City College intending to earn enough credits to go on to UCLA. Students were placed alphabetically in class, so Janet sat next to a friendly fellow named Irving Levine. He was Sonny Salter’s first cousin! It was through the adorable Irving that Janet met Max at LACC. A recent New York transplant with a broad accent, after Sonny said “bottl’ o wattah” ten times, Janet knew she’d marry him.
A CYMBIDIUM CORSAGE
Although he was very shy at heart, the very day after Max met Janet, he invited her out to the Hollywood Palladium where Glen Miller was appearing. Max picked her up in a classic car and gave her a green cymbidium orchid corsage. “Wow,” she thought. “My first orchid!” Janet was living with her father and stepmom and her dad remarked about Sonny, “This kid seems to be a good one and a smart one.” He was right!
Janet remembers that most of the young men she knew, laid-back California types, mumbled about going to the beach or the show. They were nothing like the aggressive Sonny Salter. He talked loudly about politics and all of the injustices in the world. He was going to make something of himself and solve society’s problems. All this (and more!) was said in a barely intelligible New York accent!!
