1940s: Love, Marriage and Baby Carriages 135
Finally, Janet and Max dated exclusively for a month, and one day Sonny said, “Well, I guess we should get married.” It seemed like a good idea to Janet, too, who said, “O.K.” Janet remembers two things about how Lena, Sonny’s mother, greeted the news of the upcoming marriage. First she said to both of them, “It’s nice you’re getting married.” Then she turned to Sonny, “Remember, son, this is forever and you can never come back home!” Thus, Lena warned the young couple to stick it out.
Janet also remembers leaning down to give Lena a peck on the cheek, which Lena managed to duck, even though she was in a wheelchair. The Levines did not like to kiss!
