and a complex known as the Court on Strand Avenue, a charming group of twelve cottages with a large grassy area with geraniums in the center. Next door was a small Mormon church. The church and the original four-unit apartment building remain. There were huge white hydrangeas on the side of my grandmother’s house that I remember calling “snowballs.”
Rose was so improved that Fannie asked her favorite daughter to leave Denver and come West. It was a fateful decision because after a year Rose fell ill and passed away. Abe, attending Santa Monica High at the time, and Birdene, said the brilliant and witty Rose was mourned by the family forever after.

Aunt Rose in the 1920s and her engagement ring. My mother’s sister passed away in her early twenties. The ring was given to my mother, then passed down to me. Rose was said to have been brilliant, with a great sense of humor as is evident in these photos.
